Wellness Effects of EMF Radiation

The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damage to DNA, increase the temperature of tissues and even disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively engaged with the EHS communities, medical professionals and researchers. ARPANSA will continue study research related to the health effects caused by EMF radiation.

RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) are associated with DNA damage and other adverse health adverse effects. EMFs can alter the intracellular ionic levels that are essential to ensure a cell's electrochemical balance. In turn, this can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting in DNA damage. Moreover exposure to EMFs can also trigger an overproduction of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

is emf radiation harmful  to radiation from RF-EMF has been associated with changes in the development of male germ cells. This is due to the differentiation of the germ cell into spermatozoa as well as functional maturation as the spermatozoa travel through the epididymis. To investigate the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to male germ cells A specially designed waveguide machine was constructed to expose mice that were not restrained to RF-EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers found that exposure to RF-EME caused oxidative DNA damage in the spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% following a week of treatment, and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Although RF-EMF radiation is not yet recognized as a true carcinogen. However, several studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF can affect DNA health in variety of cell varieties. In one of these studies, scientists were exposed Vero cells with an EMF at 100 Hz over 45 minutes. They assessed DNA damage for at 48 hours following exposure to determine if exposure affected DNA integrity.

The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
Although the effects of RF-EMF are typically thought as thermal in nature, some studies have revealed that non-thermal effects may also be evident. These effects may account for certain of the unsolved findings in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. This is why it is crucial to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

The non-thermal effects that RF-EMF can have may be mediated by the cell membrane. This is a field of research that has been thoroughly studied. Particularly, the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been studied. It is believed that energy from RF-EMF higher than 1 MHz is transferred to tissue through dielectric as well as ionic dissipation. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy transferred to the tissue could be up to 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissue are controlled in the form and quantity of water molecules and ions and other substances in the body.  https://www.pearltrees.com/deadbrake4/item509497143  determines how well absorbed EMR RF is by various tissues. The tissues with the highest conductivity tend to absorb more field, and thus cause more of an impact. This is the reason why the amount of heat generated by tissue does not increase steadily from outside to inside and is only noticeable in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissue are less prone to RF heating as compared to other tissues, since they have a low water content.

The depth of penetration of electromagnetic fields is determined by the frequency and strength of field. Muscle tissue is more able to absorb field energy than other tissues and transforms it into heat more effectively. Typically the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured in millimeters (mm). However,  is emf radiation harmful , the more shallow the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF-EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier which can alter sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. In addition to this, the effects that EMF on brain activity have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases. For example, EMF from mobile phones can affect electroencephalogram activity and sleep patterns, as well as the activity of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF EMF to brain cells. They also examined how ELF EMF on the brain system. While the mechanisms of the cell that play a role are not fully comprehended, there is a clear connection between exposure to ELF-EMF and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are tested methods to regenerate myelin inside the brain.

Researchers have observed that exposure to frequencies of 900 millimeters EMF caused a rise in the permeability of BBB and increased symptoms of neuronal damage in rodents. They also observed increased extravasation of neuronal albumin. Additionally, they observed the following: after 30 mins of exposure to 900 MHz 99mTc-MIBI accelerated its penetration in the cortex. But this effect did not occur with Evans blue injections.

However, RF-EMF is not able to provide a definitive mechanism for disrupting the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure can increase erythrocyte membrane permeability. This could influence the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium ions. Additionally, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain is also connected to increasing the permeability of BBB.
